St.

St. Baldrick’s 2008 with a Twist – Eureka Fire &
Stewartstown Elementary
Since 2005, members of the Eureka Volunteer Fire &
Ambulance Company have participated in an event called St.
Baldrick’s. The St.
Baldrick’s Foundation raises money and awareness for childhood
cancer research, with events held each year all across the
country and coinciding with the St. Patrick’s Day holiday.
Team members, or “Shavees” as they’re more affectionately
known, agree to have their heads shaved in return for monetary
donations to the charity.
In recent years, the Stewartstown Elementary School has
teamed with the fire company in a joint effort to raise money.
With that teamwork has come great success.
Last year, as a team, we raised an unbelievable $16,400,
bringing our three-year total to over $34,800!
That is why this year, a special event will be held
locally on Friday, March 14th, 2008 in the
Stewartstown Elementary cafeteria, beginning at 5:00pm.
At this time, a combination of at least 30 firefighters,
students, teachers, and staff will have their heads shaved bald
by local barbers and hair stylists who have volunteered their
time and equipment.
For those who would like to participate but are not up for
having their head shaved, a less drastic alternative will be
offered – the opportunity to have your hair colored green.
There are currently 100 elementary students and other
individuals signed up to get their hair colored!
The event is free of charge and open to any and all
persons who would like to participate or just come and show
support. Donations
will be accepted throughout the evening.
Pit beef, hot dogs, sides, baked goods, drinks, and other
food will be available for sale with all proceeds going to the
charity. DJ Bob Rudy
from 98.5 WYCR will be on hand providing the entertainment and
broadcasting live for his radio show!
Come out, have some food and a good time, socialize, and
show your support for this worthy cause.
Since its inception in 2000, St. Baldrick’s has raised
more than $34 million and grown into the world’s best-known
program for childhood cancer research.
Childhood cancer remains the No. 1 disease killer of
children. Worldwide
160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year.
Today, through advancements in diagnosis and treatment,
the survival rate is 77 percent.
That also means that 23 percent will lose their battle.
There is still plenty of work to be done.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is run by only a handful of
staffers. This means
an extremely low overhead, unlike most other charitable
organizations.
The primary beneficiary of St. Baldrick’s is CureSearch
National Childhood Cancer Foundation – which supports CureSearch
Children’s Oncology Group, the world’s foremost childhood cancer
research organization.
Eureka members are asking for your help to reach their
fundraising goals for 2008.
If you are unable to attend the event but still want to
donate to the cause, you may do so by any one of four ways:
on-line, by phone, by check, or a cash donation.
By far the easiest method of donation is on-line at
www.stbaldricks.org.
Just click on “Donate” and search for the “Eureka
Fire” team.
If you are insecure about using your credit card on-line, simply
contact St. Baldrick’s at 1-888-899-BALD.
Donations by cash or check require that a donation form
be filled out. Forms
are available on-line or from any of the participating team
members. Again,
donations will be accepted the night of the event.
Whichever method you chose to donate, know that donations
to St. Baldrick’s are tax deductible.
The foundation is an independent, IRS approved, 501(c)(3)
organization, Federal ID #20-1173824.
Shortly after donating, you will receive a statement from
St. Baldrick’s for tax reporting purposes.
For more information about St. Baldrick’s, to download
forms, or to view the progress of the Eureka team, visit

head shaved or colored or have any questions regarding the
event, please contact Stewartstown PTA President Bonni Nelson at
mikeandbonni@msn.com or Eureka Firefighter Todd
Gibney at 717-993-8935 or
