Frequently Asked
Questions
Q. Is there any difference between a paid EMT and a
volunteer EMT?
A. No. Both have to pass the same certification program
and maintain the same level of competence. Our precepting
program helps to assure that recently certified EMTs receive the
experience needed in order to provide the best care possible.
Q. I called for an ambulance and want to go to a Maryland
hospital. Why won't you take me there?
A. There are many factors involved. Distance is the main
one. A transport to York or Memorial Hospital places us out of
service for about 1 hour on average. A transport to the nearest
Maryland hospital (GBMC) would typically put us out of service for over
2.5 hours. While we are out of service, response time is greatly
delayed because we have to rely on service from our
mutual aid partners (New Freedom, Red Lion, Fawn Grove and
Brogue). Insurance will also only pay for
transport to the closest facility. The patient is responsible
for the balance. With these things in mind, your local
municipalities have requested that we only transport to York and
Memorial.
Q. I have a question on my ambulance service bill. Who
should I call?
A. We outsource our billing to a third party,
Cornerstone. Their contact information is on your bill. They are
best able to assist you. If you have questions about your
membership, please call the station.
Q. I can't fight fire or run on the ambulance. Can I
still help out?
A. Most certainly. We are in need of administrative
support, fund raising support, bingo help, station maintenance
and landscaping, and many other tasks. If you have a skill you
think we could use, give us a call. All help is welcome.
